I just started a wheel-throwing course, and was getting excited about pottery, so much that my class couldn't fulfill my excitement on its own. This book was a great supplement, it gave me lots of ideas and a really wide perspective on the possibilities that ceramics have to offer. The book probably isn't enough for advanced (or even semi-advanced) potters, but when your getting into the field its a great resource for exploring and getting inspired. It has a beautiful and catching design that encourages lots of browsing. The information provided is short and succinct, but enough for self-starters to begin working from. (For example, with the books help I wouldn't make a professional slip mold, but it would be a darn good one to start from). Don't buy this if you are looking to refine a specific technique, buy it because you want the possibilities of ceramics.
Got this book for christmas and I absolutely love it.The way the chapters are organized is really nice and I especially like the short artist descriptions.I've been working with ceramics for a while now, but there was still lots of useful stuff I didn't knew in this book.
It is certainly a digestible bible, those books we get inspired to read from cover to cover. In fact, since I am a beginner in the pottery world, I have just finished reading it entirely. Even though I only take one hands-on class per week, it is clear that this book was and will be a positive addition to the learning process. During these last few weeks, while reading right next to bed before sleep, this book has inspired me, brought some creative ideas, and reinforced me that I should keep in this personal pursuit. It is more than a learning companion, it can also be a nice coffee-table book.As we can see from the preview pages available on Amazon, the book is divided into clear sections. It covers everything from choosing proper raw materials and tools all the way to finishing techniques such as enamels and lusters. Some highlights and differentiators are:1. A well-written "Resources Section" that helps in many areas such as marketing, training courses, suppliers, useful charts, and trade shows.2. It has 12 concise but well-written "Artist Profiles" that stimulate our own journey through their stories.3. Can't emphasize more about the enumerated step-by-step instructions with both pictures and readings to better explain each piece of information.
Should be named Pottery Bible. Maybe 3 pages on slip cast mold ceramics do's and dont's. I was looking for a book to teach me how to use my molds and kiln and slip and how to fire and paint bisqueware, types of paints, etc. Not much of what I was looking for in this book that I've found.
This book has nothing to do with the Lord or Christianity. Which is a bit misleading. I was kind’ itching to know how John the Baptist made a pinch pot but I’ll cuddle with my wonder for eternity and glaze these ceramic fish my cousin Randall made.
This is a very nice read for anyone interested in learning about ceramics. It mostly covers processes on how to do things, but it also has featured artists that it also talks about. Since it mostly covers processes, it's great for beginners, or to just keep. If you already know how to use a potter's wheel, slab build, glaze, etc. it's not that essential.
