Die Geschichten über langjährige Ehepaare sind ebenso bunt wie das Cover.Julia Grosse (geboren 1976) hat von klein auf zu ihren Großeltern aufgeblickt. Sie waren mehr als 70 Jahre ein Paar. Auf der Suche nach einer Antwort, wie man eine so tiefe Verbundenheit ein ganzes Leben lang aufrechterhält, hat sie neun Paare interviewt, die alle weit über 50 Jahre zusammenleben.Interessant daran ist, dass jedes Paar andere Prioritäten setzt. Bei den einen war das Eheleben nicht immer so entspannt, wie es im Rückblick aussieht. Viele haben mit nichts begonnen und sich gemeinsam etwas aufgebaut. Bei den Paaren, die Kinder hatten, gab es die typische Rollenverteilung, bei der die Frau die Familie zusammen hielt und der Mann für das Einkommen zuständig war. Dass das nicht immer so bleiben muss, zeigt die Aussage von Herbert Baumann: Nachdem er erkannt hat, was er früher falsch machte, versucht er nun „das aufzuholen, was ich seinerzeit versäumt habe“ (Seite 48)Die tiefen Einblicke in die verschiedenen Lebensmodelle (auch ein lesbisches Paar kam zu Wort) haben mehrere Gemeinsamkeiten. Alle wissen, dass sie sich aufeinander verlassen können und haben großen Respekt voreinander. Man muss nicht immer einer Meinung sein, aber „man muss versuchen, die des anderen zu nachzuvollziehen und zu akzeptieren.“ Während sich die einen gar nicht trennen können, meinen andere: „Es hält frisch, wenn man nicht immer aufeinander hockt.“Untermalt ist das Buch mit aussagekräftigen Fotos, deren Anblick mich sehr gerührt hat, weil das Glück und die Liebe daraus hervorleuchten. Nachdem ich mich einmal mit all diesen internationalen Geschichten beschäftigt habe, bleibt der tiefe Wunsch übrig, die eigene Ehe ebenso erfüllt bis zum Ende zu leben.Fazit: Obwohl das Buch kein Beziehungsratgeber ist, kann man als Leser eine Menge daraus lernen. Möge es vielen Liebespaaren Mut machen!

Abgesehen von der wunderbaren Sprache (die witzig und zugleich ernsthaft ist), erzählt die Autorin in diesem Buch nicht nur von der Liebe und den Möglichkeiten und Idealen des Zusammenlebens. Sie erzählt so viel über die Gedanken und Zweifel des Individuums, das immer in einem Spannungsverhältnis von Gestern und Morgen, von den Vorstellungen der Eltern, Großeltern und der eigenen kleinen Familie geprägt ist. Die besuchten Paare sind dabei eine wohl konzipierte und heterogene Auswahl, die trotz der Unterschiedlichkeit der Biografien und Liebeswege irgendwie dann doch das leben: Love the one you're with.

Excellently written and amusing biography of a most unexpected personality (for a historian of his time). Mr Dinshaw writes with elegance and expressive style, with an authority and erudition that surprises and pleases at every turn.

This is a long and almost-too-sumptuously detailed biography of a rather interesting man, the Byzantinist Steven Runciman. In my view, it might have benefitted from some trimming. Fundamentally, the problem is that Runciman is not an easy man to get inside the head of, and, other than the fact that he managed to write a popularly successful narrative history of the Crusades, Runciman is a man whose achievements in life are likely to be of interest mostly to those who savor the life stories of grandee-scholars. I thought the issues of "How good is his history?" and "What have other Byzantinists had to say about it since?" could have been handled in a more detailed but also more focused manner. Having said that, this is well worth reading and contains a great deal of information. In tone, it is neither adulatory nor snarky nor sensationalist -- kudos to Mr. Dinshaw for avoiding those all too frequent pitfalls.

This biography is alarmingly good for a first effort. I've been reading Runciman's excellent books for the past 50 years, and about him here and there in the memoirs of people he knew. It was thus of huge interest to learn so much more about the man and his character. Dinshaw has rounded up a huge amount of information (and seems to know more than is good for him about the English homintern and its satellites), and leaves no detail aside. The result is that Runciman is revealed, over a great many pages, as a fascinating and not particularly likeable individual. He lived to be 97 with the first half of his life full of interest and his whole adult life writing extremely good books. An excellent read.
